Finds of the Week - December 11 (12)

It’s totally my own fault this came out late this week - I was deep into listening to “evermore,” and attempting to find meaning in all of my breakups through the record.

But listening to me complain about men isn’t why you’re here! This week, I took a journey across the globe (not like, literally since there’s a pandemic) and found some great bands that I would let destroy me.

For the record, I let “evermore” destroy me as well and I’ll be publishing a lot of my thoughts about that in a few days.

1995 - Blue Dahlia

I wasn’t sure if I loved this song at first, but when I’d pull up Spotify, I kept clicking on it.  At first, I didn’t like that it reminded me so much of the infamous one-hit-wonder, “You Get What You Give,” by New Radicals, but now I find a lot of comfort in the similar melodies. I will admit, I continuously sing the lyrics to “You Get What You Give,” but I like when the melody switches in the middle of the first verse.

While it’s not as good as “You Get What You Give,” I still find a lot of comfort in this song!

Desk Chair - Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers

This was the week of kickass girl groups from around the globe and bands with kickass names! Our first band, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, is first, fucking cool as shit. Four friends decided to form a post-punk band during a sleepover - that’s my middle school dream come true.

While I’m happy other women are living my dreams, I’m actually living for the music they put out! “Desk Chair,” was their first and only single of 2020, but what a single to release.

Stand out lines : “And I've been setting my alarm just a little/Bit late just to feel the rush of the deadline,” and “All I ever wanted was to feel the way I do with you.” In my post-heartbreak that was created post-breakup, I’m not ready to date, but I’m finding comfort in the memories of past relationships. This song, along with “Luminous,” (see below) are doing the trick for me!

Luminous - Slotface

Like Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, I love this band’s name. It’s pronounced “Slutface” and I think that’s a wonderful way to spell that out!

But this song floods me with those “We just started dating,” moments I crave. The late nights, the constant questions, the feeling that no one is going to love you as much as they do in that moment - that’s what this song reminds me of. If I can’t relive those moments, I’ll just keep streaming this song over and over.

To all the boys I’ve found luminous at one point in time, thank you very much for those fleeting moments you once gave me.

Wah - The Buoys

I love women in punk. I know, men have a place in the scene, but I don’t know why women aren’t at the front. The Buoys prove that statement I just made in “Wah.”

The song is quick and confident, which is what punk should be. This song deserves more love. The Buoys overall deserve more love! “Linda,” is also an absolutely wonderful song, and the more I listen to this band, I pray that COVID ends soon so I can hopefully one day, see this wonderful band play!

Oh I forgot to say, but the guitar bridge in this song - immaculate.

How to Have Fun - Molly Payton

As we were listening to this, Claire did the thing where she realized she already had music saved by Molly Payton, but I’m not Claire and this was a new discovery! Her deep voice is rough around the edges but ultimately beautiful. She is meant to sing rock music and this song proves it.

As I was writing this, I read the lyrics out loud to Claire, because I knew she would feel them on an ultra-deep level. I only said aloud the first verse and she screamed. If that’s not relatable, I don’t know what is. I might love this song, but Claire feels it.

If you’re looking for more new music, check out my playlist I have with my roommate, Claire, called, “fuck! These are some funky fresh finds!” which we curate throughout the month! Some of the songs that didn’t make my top five finds of the week, but are still worth checking out, are on the playlist!
