Finds of the Week - November 27

Welcome to another week where I feature some of the best songs I discovered! There’s nothing I love more than small, barely on the scene bands absolutely killing it, and this week’s list is chalked full of them!

Hush - Crawlers

This has been my go-to song of the week. When I get in my car, I find myself clicking on this every single time. Why? It’s fucking wonderful.

As a big fan of The Kills, I can’t help but compare Crawlers’ lead singer, Holly Minto, to Alison Mosshart. There’s something in her voice that mirrors the power Mosshart has and the power I’m in love with.

Crawlers only have three songs out on Spotify, which is so upsetting because all of their songs are absolute hits. “Hush” is dark, but that chorus hooks you. I’m in love with this song, and it makes me feel like a badass woman. My biggest complaint is that it’s not longer! But safe to say, I love this group and I’ll be waiting for more music from them.

God in Jeans - Ryan Beatty

I think one of my favorite genres of music is turning something religious into something pretty anti-religious. Like, I’d consider Mt. Joy’s “Astrovan” to be in this genre.

“God in Jeans” got me because I’m really into the idea that God is actual a gay man that the singer is hooking up with. As a metaphor, that’s beautiful, but if he was literally hooking up with the big man, capital G God, I love that.

Can we also talk about the beautiful string sections of this song? No matter how you read the lyrics of this song, this song is a fun indie pop song that showcases a lot of musical talent.

Read It - The Sickboy Method

I have to thank Crawlers for showing me this band too. Well, they didn’t show me personally, but they had a playlist which had a whole bunch of bands they were into at the moment. The Sickboy Method was on there, and I was entranced by their punk sound, but also I was super into the band as a whole.

They have only about 1,000 listens per song on Spotify, but holy shit they deserve more. Their sound isn’t rushed. I hear a lot of younger punk bands that play just to play - which is super cool because I believe that’s how punk should be played to an extent - but this band knows its sound. It’s not chasing something or attempting to be something they’re not.

This group is badass and I’m hoping for more from them coming up!

Cult Song - Torture and the Desert Spiders

Maybe the trend this week is bands who need more love, because the same goes for Torture and the Desert Spiders. Again, thanking Crawlers for this song too. “Cult Song” is their most streamed song at only 3,000 listens… And this song is so good!

“Cult Song” reminds me of an Indie Pop song, mixed with some 1970’s blues inspired guitar riffs. I’m a sucker for a good guitar part, and this song gives me exactly what I’m looking for in a chill song. Also what a kickass name for a song!

And I die a little when I hear the line, “And a thousand times I'll see you, and a thousand times I'll cry/Why'd you ever say that you needed some time?”

I was really excited to see that Torture released more music in 2020 and I’m going to keep streaming “Cult Song” until it doesn’t hurt anymore.

Love’s Not Enough - The Mysterines

Unlike most of the songs on this week’s list, “Love’s Not Enough,” has already raised to some level of fame (well besides Ryan Beatty’s “God in Jeans”). But this was my first time coming across this song, and The Mysterines as well! But like almost every other band on this list (besides again, Ryan Beatty), this band is killing it across the pond.

Women are dominating the rock scene right now, and I expect to see The Mysterines topping the scene in the next few years. “Love’s Not Enough” is exactly why they should be leading the charts. The entire band rocks out so hard on this track, but also, every single song they have out channels the feelings that makes rock so fucking badass! Take the chorus on “Gasoline,” where lead singer Lia Metcalfe really has me feeling the lyrics, “I just love to hate you.”

Please keep giving credit to this amazing band. They’re absolutely crushing it and it’s fucking awesome!

If you’re looking for more new music, check out my playlist I have with my roommate, Claire, called, “fuck! These are some funk fresh finds!” which we curate throughout the month! Some of the songs that didn’t make my top five finds of the week, but are still worth checking out, are on the playlist!
